
On May 23, 2025, Canadian border services officers at Montreal’s Marine and Rail Service intercepted and seized 577.43 kg of suspected cannabis from a container in the process of being exported to the Netherlands.
In a press release on June 6, 2025, Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) explained that officials discovered the contraband concealed in 1,023 vacuum-sealed packages during an inspection that was hidden in custom-built crates and surrounded by bundles of engineered wood. Authorities say the cannabis is valued at $4.2 million, or about $7.25 a gram.
“This operation deals a significant blow to transnational trafficking networks,” said the Honourable Gary Anandasangaree, Minister of Public Safety. “Thank you to the CBSA officers whose vigilance, aided by cutting-edge technology and targeted intelligence, is helping to ensure Canada’s security and prosperity.”
This was the newest in a series of such seizures announced in recent weeks, with nearly 3,000 kg of cannabis being seized by CBSA.
Another 32 kilograms were recently seized by officials in Hong Kong, en route from Canada. On May 26, revenue officers in Ireland seized 149 kilograms of cannabis at Shannon Airport in parcels originating from Canada. In October 2024, Officers with the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) discovered 45 kilograms of cannabis hidden in a Canadian traveller’s luggage on October 26, 2024, destined for the Netherlands.
