An illegal cannabis store was shut down recently in Ontario.

In May, a joint effort with members of the Durham Regional Police Service Central East Community Response Unit and the OPP-led Joint Forces Cannabis Enforcement Team (PJFCET) conducted an investigation into an illegal cannabis dispensary in Oshawa.

Officers entered the store and seized a quantity of money, illegal cannabis and tobacco products. The estimated value of the illegal cannabis products is more than $139,000.  The unlicensed store, My Legacy Cannabis, was shut down and one person was arrested.

Jeffrey Donaldson, age 51, is charged with offences under the Criminal Code and Cannabis Act, including possessing cannabis for the purpose of selling, possession of illicit cannabis, trafficking in contraband tobacco and possession of proceeds of crime.

He was released on an undertaking.

My Legacy Cannabis is a chain of unlicensed cannabis stores with locations in Oshawa, Hamilton, Mississauga, Ottawa, and Toronto. The stores often have signage indicating affiliation with Indigenous peoples operating on sovereign land.

This is not the first time a My Legacy location has been raided by police. The Oshawa location was raided by police in February 2024 as well.

In November 2024, Kingston Police Special Services executed a search warrant at a recently- reopened My Legacy located at 185 Division Street in the city of Kingston, Ontario. Kingston Police previously raided the same location just a few days prior.

In May, police in Ottawa shut down an unlicensed store that, although the name was not listed, was on a block that was home to an Indigenous Cannabis Culture location and a My Legacy Cannabis.

In August 2024, Indigenous supporters of My Legacy Cannabis engaged city officials at the launch of Market at 70 King in downtown Oshawa and secured a meeting with Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter.
