Cannabis sales in Nova Scotia increased by 5% in 2024, for a total of $127.1 million for the year ended March 31, 2025.
The Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation’s (NSLC) annual report, released on June 24, 2025, shows cannabis sales beginning to flatten, up just $6 million from 2023’s total of $121 million in sales.
Despite these modest increases, sales of Nova Scotia-grown-and-made cannabis products declined by 8.5% to $36.2 million for the year. Nova Scotia cannabis products account for 28.5% of all cannabis sales in the province.
The average consumer basket for cannabis sales in 2024 in Nova Scotia, at $37.68, was about the same as the previous year’s $37.27. Retail shopper transactions for cannabis in 2024 increased by 3.9% from the previous year.
The average price per gram of cannabis decreased 2% to $5.83.
This past year, the NSLC also launched its first responsibility campaign, focusing on the importance of purchasing regulated and legal cannabis.
“Our strong growth in cannabis sales demonstrates our continued progress in competing with the illicit market, and we take our role as a responsible retailer seriously,” said Greg Hughes, NSLC President and CEO. “It’s important that we share messages that help Nova Scotians understand the risks associated with purchasing cannabis from the illicit market.”
In June 2024, the NSLC also added a new cannabis store in Shelburne, bringing the total in the province to 50.
While cannabis sales increased by just 5%, beverage alcohol sales increased by just 1%, and the total volume sold decreased by 1.7%. Cannabis sales were about 14% of the NSLC’s $888.3 million in total sales in the 2024 fiscal year.
“The trend of flattening beverage alcohol sales and increasing cannabis sales continued this past fiscal year,” said Hughes. “Like other retailers, we saw operational challenges that impacted the retail environment overall, such as the impact of the Federal Tax Break and the response to U.S. tariffs. However, our team adapted seamlessly to ensure they continued to provide an exceptional shopping experience while remaining committed to our responsibility mandate.”
The NSLC says 100% of its profits are returned to the government to help fund key public services. The agency had forecast $126.5 million in cannabis sales in 2024.
