This past week at StratCann, we looked at the cannabis industry’s contribution to Canada’s GDP and the newest sales figures from Quebec for 2024.

Manitoba passed a bill banning any new cannabis sales licenses for convenience stores in urban areas, we published our newest monthly jobs recap, and a contributor looked at some of the discussions at the recent Grow Up conference in Toronto. 

In financial news, Apollo and MediPharm continued to trade barbs in the lead-up to a shareholder vote, Simply Solventless released its 2024 annual report after several delays, and Village Farms announced the closing of a transaction to privatize its fresh produce business.

In law enforcement news, police in Brockville arrested one suspect in a recent cannabis store break-in, the CBSA intercepted 577 kg of cannabis destined for the Netherlands, and Windsor police shut down an unlicensed cannabis store.

On Monday, June 9, the Town of Olds’ council will hold a public hearing on a proposal to rezone two parcels of land in the southeast industrial park owned by SNDL Inc. The request by SNDL is to rezone the land where it previously operated its cannabis cultivation business from Direct Control 7 (cannabis production) to Light Industrial 1.   

A new study highlights 33 significant markers that influence cannabinoid production, promising to drive the development of cannabis varieties with specific cannabinoid profiles. 

The International Journal of Drug Policy published a systematic review of cannabis-impaired driving educational initiatives targeting young drivers in Canada, which examined 15 Canadian initiatives: seven educational programs and eight awareness campaigns, encompassing both national and regional levels. 

A proposal for a new cannabis store at the Chemainus Village Square Shopping Centre in BC will go to a public hearing.

The Société québécoise du cannabis (SQDC) was one of 14 winners of the Retail Council of Canada’s 2025 Excellence in Retailing Awards for its 90-minute delivery service. 

One cannabis company, THC BioMed, announced the launch of its cannabis seeds in Manitoba now that the province allows home growing. 

A prospective new cannabis store, 494 Cannabis, has applied for a licence in Whitehorse, YK. 

Health risks from cannabis may grow as users age, reports the New York Times.

The Tom Longboat run, hosted annually by Six Nations of the Grand River (SNGR) near Brantford, ON, since 1999, has been cancelled after the Longboat family spoke out against the First Nation’s cannabis industry

Charges were laid after an investigation of an illegal cannabis delivery service known as HerbertHaze, previously known as Potawawa420 until May 31, located in Pembroke and Petawawa.

International cannabis news 

A new research paper found that the legalization of cannabis provides a substantial potential benefit for Finland.

California lawmakers on Monday unanimously approved a bill that would pause an impending 25% tax increase on the state’s legal cannabis industry.

And finally, Vermont lawmakers rejected a proposal that would have allowed consumers to purchase marijuana at cannabis-specific special events.
