On December 17, RCMP in Eskasoni, Nova Scotia searched an unlicensed cannabis storefront, seizing a “significant quantity” of cannabis and resulting in one charge being laid.

RCMP say they received a report in October of the unlicensed cannabis retailer on Crane Cove Rd. in the Eskasoni First Nation. RCMP say that officers attended the property on multiple occasions and engaged in a dialogue with the owners of the storefront in an effort to resolve the matter.

Then, on December 17, as a result of the storefront continuing to operate on the Eskasoni First Nation and not voluntarily ceasing operations, police say they conducted a search of the unlicensed cannabis storefront under the provincial Cannabis Control Act. The investigation is ongoing.

Nova Scotia RCMP says they are continuing to work with the Chief and Council of Eskasoni First Nation in what they call a measured approach, which includes consultation with the stakeholders on community complains that the store was selling to minors.

First Nations sovereignty as it relates to cannabis production and sale has been an ongoing issue in Canada. Ottawa as well as provinces and territories encourage compliance with applicable federal and provincial or territorial rules, while some in First Nations communities argue they have a right to operate outside those jurisdiction’s cannabis regulations.

The small Crane Cove Rd in Nova Scotia has a handful of residential locations.
