How to buy legal cannabis seeds in Canada

| Staff

More options for those looking to buy cannabis seeds through legal channels are arriving in store shelves in some provinces across Canada.

Although only a few varieties of cannabis seeds were available in most provinces and territories since the first day of legalization, it wasn’t until 2020 that new varieties began arriving on store shelves, both online and in brick and mortar, in at least a few provinces.

While the federal Cannabis Act allows for Canadians to grow up to four cannabis plants at home (with the potential for other provincial restrictions), this limited number of legal options – not only in brand but in variety – has meant many are forced to continue to access seeds through other channels.

This past March, a BC based cannabis nursery, Progeny Bio/Erbaceous, announced a new variety they would be sending to BC soon, Kilimanjaro (Stylized as: “K 1 L I M A N J A R O”). Soon after a micro cultivator in Alberta, ANC Cannabis began offering seeds in BC under the 34 St Seed Co brand, followed soon by Alberta and Ontario, offering varieties like Lemon Safire, Lemon Skunk, Pink Lemonade, Super Lemon Haze, Golden Lemons 2.0, and Fruity Hoops

Since then, several other options have slowly emerged, with British Columbia offering the bulk of the current options (11 currently). While Progeny Bio/Erbaceous now has a second variety, D3NALI, available in BC, WeedMe, Jax Genetics, Pristine Seeds and now Pure Sun Farms are added to the list. Prices range from $29-$59 for four seeds.

WeedMe is an Ontario-based standard producer, Jax Genetics is a cannabis nursery based in British Columbia under the name NCR Cannabis, Pristine Seeds is a collaboration between BC-based nursery The Dumb Dutchman and GTEC affiliate Tumbleweed Farms, and Pure Sun Farms is a standard greenhouse producer in BC.

Nova Scotia also currently lists 11 varieties of seeds, although only eight are available at the moment. Two are Tweed’s stand by varieties of Argyle and Bakerstreet at $54.99 for four seeds. The other nine are from Jax at $59.80 for four.

Ontario and New Brunswick come in third, both currently listing four varieties of seed. Ontario has three varieties from 34 Street for $49.95 for four and one from Tweed at $60.00 for four. New Brunswick lists three varieties from Jax at $74.99  for four and one from Tweed at $59.99 for four.

Although Saskatchewan has no provincial online retailer, several Saskatchewan retailers that do sell online list several varieties of seeds. Wiid Cannabis in Regina lists four varieties on their online store, D3NALI (Erbaceous) for $47.95, Lillooet Landrace (Pristine) for $34.95, Headband (Pristine) for $34.95 and Bakerstreet (Tweed) for $59.95. A Spiritleaf in Moosejaw listed Tweed’s Bakertsreet seeds at the same price. A Fire and Flower in Martensville lists Tweed’s Bakerstreet seeds for  $51.20. Lush Leaf in Esterhazy lists four varieties, D3NALI for $50.45 Bakerstreet for $61.90, and Citrus Biscuits and Animal Cracker for $45.05 from One Leaf. (One Leaf offers seeds for sale to medical users via Shelter, as well.)

All seeds being currently offered for sale in the legal market are only sold in packs of four. Although federal law allows people to buy and possess in public up to thirty cannabis seeds at a time, provinces have reportedly been instructing cannabis companies to only sell them in packs of four, so as to not imply provincial support for people growing more than the federal and provincial limit of four plants.

As the two provinces that have banned home growing of cannabis, Manitoba and Quebec are also not providing any seeds or plants for sale to the public.

Only one province or territory has offered clones for sale to their residents thus far. Newfoundland started listing a handful of varieties of clones from Ontario-based cultivator Eve & Co in December 2018, allowing consumers to purchase the plants online through the provincial retailer and having them shipped directly to the consumer from the cultivator.
